Hedging Out The Spiders

I have still been looking for natural ways to ward spiders away from our house. My mom and dad were running around the other day, and they pulled over at this old farm house so that my dad could check out some bucket of bolts,,I mean antique car LOL.

My mom started talking to the lady of the house and as they were talking my mom noticed some odd green orbs along the foundation of the farmhouse. My mom asked the lady what they were, and she explained that they were HEDGE APPLES. Hedge Apples? Come to find out they are a fruit that grow around there, and people have been using them for ages to ward spiders from their homes.

Hedge apples Pictures, Images and Photos I did not think to get a picture of the ones my mom brought home before they started to age..so I found this one one photobucket.com

I will let you know how they do.....

Please provide an update, because I would love to know if this works! We're always trying to get rid of spiders. But where in the world do you buy hedge apples?

I don't like spiders either, especially the "banana" spiders that come out in summertime here. Hadn't heard of hedge apples before, let us know if it works!

I think I've seen something like this at the grocery store - it says they are not to be eaten (no kidding!). I didn't have any idea what they were used for though! Thanks for sharing!

I hate spiders. Do they really work, because I may have to figure out a way to get some in Baltimore.

Thank you all for your comments..I am going to do a follow up post soon. Maybe I will take a pic of the ones we have as they age...kind of funky LOL. They seem to be working, or it is coincidence. With winter coming I do not know if spiders get more scarce or if I should be seeing more as they retreat inside?

Lyla, what state do you live in that they have them in the stores? How cool. I think you could eat them , as far as I think they aren't poisonous to people. They have a very slight citrus scent that I think the spiders don't like...I dunno Still investigating.
