We decided to get serious this year about our garden and planted some starter tomato seeds.
We bought the little pots with the starter soil in them. We then followed the directions that said place 2 seeds in each container, water and wait for seed to come up. Then we were instructed to thin them by snipping the weakest plant in each little pot.
So we did all that and waited and oh my! In 4 days we have a ton of tomato plant starters. Surely when you do plantings like this you do not expect all to take root, well they did! What a bumper crop we will have this year.
The kids are very excited to watch the tomatoes grow. We planted some violas that same day as well and there is no sign of life on that side of the planter tray. I think maybe those seed were a little too old. This is a learning experience for all of us, and we have a lot more experimenting to do.
Happy gardening all.

Hubby Needs A New Pair Of Boots

Ah yes it is that time again...Hubby needs a new pair of boots.
I am so glad we found a web site that handles the size that my hubby needs for his work boots.
It save us so much time and energy going shopping online.
We don't have to bundle the kids up and go from store to store looking for just the right style or sizes in work boots.
On this site he can get brand names like converse, Danner, Wolverine, Rocky and Tactical 511 just to name a few of their many brands.
They even have FREE shipping in the U.S. another way they save us cash.
There is one style we hope never goes off their list because it is so durable and comfortable my hubby just has to have it !
It's made by wolverine and is so him. It looks nice on him and you all know how great those construction guys want to look on the job.
And the tan color goes with anything he wears.

More on Genealogy
I am still pushing forward trying to find my husband's ancestors. It does not help that there are about 25 ways that his last name has been distorted over the years..ugh.
If you are interested in genealogy at you probably heard about sites that you have to pay to use like Ancestry.com. Even Ancestry does have some resources that you can use for free, but you have to buy a membership to review everything on the site. It is not a bad deal, but if you just don't have any extra funds there are many free sites that you can get genealogical information from. I think I might start putting together a list of some of my favorite sites to use. If I manage to get one together I will post it here for you.
One free site that I use quite frequently is Familysearch.org. I like the search engine on that site. They give you a lot of options for searching. I can even search by first name only, you have to search through more records this way but when you are not sure of last name spelling errors sometimes it is the only way to search.

What Do You Have To Display?
Do you ever go to craft shows to sell your wares? Maybe you have a collector car and you like to show it off at car show events. I found this cool site before called CamelbackDisplays.com, they make all sorts of trade show exhibits.
I was looking on there again for my dad. He does art work at different shows and he likes to go to classic car shows sometimes and show off his "toys". I was thinking he needs some new table covers this year to spruce up his booth display. I might try and talk him into a full blown truss type display like they have on the site. It is amazing how involved some people's displays can get at these shows, but they really do highlight a vehicle nicely.
If you are trying to sell your work or trade at a show you might be surprised at how much a simple table top display can draw more attention to your booth. You can get as elaborate as you want, or keep it simple depending on your needs and tastes, but put some thought in to your display.

Genealogy, an Addictive Treasure Hunt
One of my favorite hobbies is genealogy. That is the term for tracing your family history back through the years. I don't get to do it as much as I would like since I have to take care of the current generation of my family lol, but it is very fun and very addictive.
It is like a treasure hunt except instead of sifting through dirt, or whatever you are sifting through old records and papers. Now days a lot of information can be found on the web, but I love it when I get the chance to actually go to a library and search through old microfiche films and such. There are some free sources and many websites that want you to pay them for the information they have collected. I understand that they want paid for the work they put in to collecting the data, but if you just don't have the money at the time it gets frustrating.
If money is tight, but you want to do some genealogical research I would check with your local library to see what services you can use there. Some library systems even have databases that you can search through from home via their website. HeritageQuest is one that my local library lets me access. It has any years of the U.S. Census in a data base so that you can search for past family members.
I will probably vent more about this in the near future. I go in spurts where I research hard and heavy for a few weeks and then I get burnt out from hitting dead ends. Check back for more tips, hints, and rants.

Philadelphia Plastic Surgery
I had never heard of a Philadelphia Plastic Surgery doctor by the name of Dr. Emily Pollard before today, but I came across her website. The site caught my attention, so I looked around. I have always had it in the back of my mind that one day I would like to get a tummy tuck. After having three cesarean sections in four years, I could really use one. I looked at the photo gallery on Dr. Pollard's site and was amazed at the before and after shots of some of the tummy tucks she has done. It made me want to get mine done tomorrow!
When you are deciding on a doctor though, you need to look at more than the photos. I wanted to see what kind of education she has to back up these results. I was amazed at the amount and variety of education she has under her belt, her office wall must be covered with framed diplomas. She has done everything from residency at Georgetown, to Chief of Plastic Surgery at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, PA. If that were not enough she is Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Drexel University College of Medicine. There are many more examples of her experience on her site as well.
Wow, I am impressed and I will definitely keep her in mind when I get ready to tune up my tummy. It is tempting not to go down her list of procedures and check them of like a menu. I'll take one of those, and those, oh and that one too! No I will be happy with a normal looking belly button again.

Shootings in Alabama and Illinois
"They" always say that tragedies happen in threes. I was hoping they were wrong this time when I heard first about the Illinois shooting of a pastor and then today 10 people shot to death in Alabama. Then it dawned on me that I had already heard of another such tragedy about a week ago. It may not have made national news, but a man in Cleveland killed several people including his newlywed wife.
What is wrong with people?! I can somewhat wrap my mind around the thought of flipping out on someone when you are in a fight, or wanting justice for a loved one that was killed etc. I do not, will not understand why people kill innocent people. If you are suicidal,, get it over with and leave the others out of it! One of the victims in Alabama was a 18 month old baby and the baby's mother. They just happened to be visiting someone else that the gunman had on his list that day. That is so terribly sad and such a waste!
My prayers and thoughts go out to the families involved. Life is short, so enjoy the ones you love today. Call someone you have been meaning to call. Write that email you have been meaning to send.

How Hot Was It?!
How hot was it? I thought I owned a mobile sauna instead of just a Dodge van. Last summer my Dodge AC compressor went out. Ugh, I was not a happy camper! I immediately looked for someone to fix my air conditioning compressor.
While I wanted someone local to do the work of course, I wanted to make sure I was not paying way to much for the parts. I did a little research on sites like DiscountACParts.com to what auto ac parts cost these days. This is a good site for finding out about air conditioning parts, or even buying them if you are a mechanic or the do it yourself type. I am not that type however so I did proceed to my nearest mechanic. I felt more comfortable since I was armed with the information on parts costs. I didn't want to get the "little lady" treatment from the mechanic.

The 35 Pound Elephant
I have found a creature that you may or may not have encountered. They are only found in houses with children, and are more likely to come out if someone in the house is sleeping. That is when I usually hear the rumblings of the 35 pound elephant.
Well of course there is not really a small elephant in my house, but it sure sounds like it every time I lay my youngest child down for a nap. His sisters that are about 35 pounds somehow magically turn into tiny little elephants. These same beautiful creatures that can twirl like ballerinas and have the daintiest tea parties you could imagine, turn in to romping, stomping beasts.
You can hear them rumble across the floor from their play room, them BOOM BOOM BOOM up the stairs. This is usually followed by their particular kind of trumpeting call. It does not sound like a traditional elephant, but more like " I HAVE TO PEE!", or "SHE TOOK MY TOY!". It happens several times a week and yet it still amazes me. Have you ever encountered this phenomenon in your house?
Maybe it is just me..LOL

Green In The Garden
My family and I can not wait for spring to get here. We have been planning out this season's garden since before the end of the last growing season. Gardening is one of the many thing we like to do with our kids. I know my husband gets to do the lion's share of the heavy duty work, but he doesn't really mind in the long run. He says it it more than worth it when he watches our little ones ooh and awe as the plants grow.
There are so many benefits to doing a garden with your family. We get to spend time together as a family, wee get fresh air, sunshine, exercise. If all these things were not enough motivation, we end up with fresh fruit and vegetables to eat and lovely flowers for our efforts. Gardening with our kids is one way we teach our kids the value of hard work, and a respect for living things including our planet.
We never really used more than some fertilizer on our garden in the past, but I wanted to get some help with the pests this year. I wanted to find organic gardening products to use on our garden. I mean, it would kind of defeat the purpose of trying to do something healthy for our family and the earth and then use harsh chemicals on our garden. We want to grow food that is is healthy for our kids, so organic gardening is the way to go in my opinion. If you agree you should check out SaferBrand.com. They sell a wide range of certified organic products to help you grow a healthy, safer garden. They also have safer products to care for your lawn, your pets, and more.
